The Christopher Kennedy Compound: Modernism Week Show House
Posted on 03/08/16
Headerck_showhouse_2016_02For the third consecutive year The Christopher Kennedy Compound: Modernism Week Show House in Palm Springs—held in conjunction with Modernism Week and brought to the public by mediasponsors Traditional Home and California Homes—drew thousands of visitors. They came seeking design ideas, a chance to view some of their favorite designers’ work and the opportunity to visit a classic mid-century property updated with today’s technology—all while contributing to show house’s mission, which is to raise $100,000 for Palm Springs Modernism and other preservation efforts. An intriguing mix of newly released product, contemporary and vintage pieces, and some that are simply timeless, graced both the indoor and outdoor spaces of the sun-kissed desert residence that spills out onto the tony Indian Canyons golf course. Completely renovating and redesigning the 4,000 square foot private residence under the watchful eye and tasteful guidance of the project’s namesake Christopher Kennedy, the show house’s sixteen designers were free to hunt for and select everything from kitchen and bath fixtures to furnishings. Here’s a diverse selection of what they came up with – all of which can be found at Cohen Design Center properties, including the Pacific Design Center. “To me,” says Kennedy, “the PDC means that my favorite fabric, furniture, and fixtures are in one place. It is my go-to source for all things luxury in interior design.” Known for their cutting-edge home technology, Crestron is a third-year sponsor of The Christopher Kennedy Compound, this year showcasing their automated shades in the living room by designer Michael Berman, the master bedroom by designer Julia Buckingham and the kitchen by Kennedy. All three spaces boast floor-to-ceiling glass and Crestron’s shades offer at-a-touch control through the Crestron Home Automation System, which also controls music, lighting and internal environment, among other features. Berman’s living room exuded a welcoming comfort. “There was a thread of continuity in the living room I designed that ran through all of the products I created for many of the sponsored companies,” says Berman. “My textiles for Kravet, ceramic tile for Walker Zanger, as well as the wallcovering for Fromental and furniture from my own line all have a mid-century and modernist edge to them. They worked so well together because the palette I chose was beautiful soft grays, oyster and cerulean blue which compliment the sunlight and desert sky.” For the living room’s sunken bar, which abuts the floor to ceiling glass doors giving out onto the pool, Berman selected a single lever faucet from his collection for ROHL. Kennedy turned to Dornbracht through Ferguson, a Major Sponsor of Modernism Week and Presenting Sponsor of The Christopher Kennedy Compound, for bathroom fixtures and appliances. The show house showcased a myriad of Dornbracht lines featured in design firm Trellis Home’s teen bath, the master bathroom designed by Kelli Ellis, Best Practice Architecture’s pool bath, the powder room by Michel Boyd, designer Keith Fortner’s den bath and the Christopher Kennedy-designed kitchen and wine room. The kitchen’s island topped with Silestone by Cosentino offers an architectural slant to the space, which is at once softened and complimented by a Phillip Jeffries wallpaper. Bosch appliances including wall ovens, induction cooktop, refrigerators and a microwave complete the kitchen space, and a Bosch washer and dryer are set in the laundry room designed by Denise McGaha. Untitled-2 Designer and author Jamie Durie turned the patios and landscape into the epitome of indoor/outdoor living by installing an outdoor grill, bar, fireplace, and a generous seating area featuring furnishings for which he selected Sunbrella outdoor fabric. Light fixtures dazzled in the spaces throughout, starting at the entry designed by 31 Westgate where a Kelly Wearstler chandelier by Visual Comfort offered a stunning first impression. In the laundry room, a Currey & Company chandelier drew attention in a usually more benign space while the Autero Mirror by Arteriors featured in the powder room provided a whimsical moment. MARTYN The crowning jewel of PDC-represented product, Baccarat’s Vega Pattern glasses selected by Martyn Lawrence-Bullard for the dining room he masterfully delivered. “I chose the Baccarat pieces because they have such a fun form that allowed them to blend perfectly with my own Haviland Limoges dinnerware collection ‘Hollywood’ that I launched last year,” says Lawrence-Bullard. “I love the shade of emerald green in the wine glasses.” A great appeal of show houses is their capacity to inspire and, without a doubt, The Christopher Kennedy Compound 2016 did just that through the high-end, unique product featured.
