Understanding the Impacts of AI In Design: Where Are We Now?
Panel: Silverscreen Theater | Reception: JANUS et Cie, Suite B-146

As artificial intelligence continues to transform every industry, leading architecture and design professionals return to discuss this fast-evolving technology and how it has moved from novelty to an essential tool for improving efficiency, expanding creativity, and elevating the design process. In a market centered on indoor-outdoor living, the conversation will also consider how AI is helping designers think more fluidly across architecture, interiors, landscape, and the way people truly live.

Renowned architecture journalist, Frances Anderton, will moderate a lively and balanced discussion, including expert panelists, Brian Pinkett, AIA, principal of architectural firm, Landry Design Group; Miroslava Brooks, AIA, NCARB, founding partner of FORMA Architects and assistant professor at UCLA Architecture and Urban Design; Mirko Wanders, Assoc. AIA, a design director and associate at Gensler, the world's largest architecture and design firm; and Claudia Afshar, founder and creative director of Claudia Afshar Design. With their insightful understanding of AI, they will highlight the latest advancements, and share how the technology enhances the design-build process in invaluable ways--while asking if the human element remains irreplaceable.

In celebration of outdoor living, a reception will immediately follow at JANUS et Cie's beautifully reimagined showroom, Suite B146.

Denise Silva (Xicana / Hopi / Mescalero Apache)
Born in East Los Angeles and raised in Riverside, California, Denise Silva (Xicana / Hopi / Mescalero Apache) is an indigenous femme, a mother of 6 seeds and a total Pisces sun + Cancer moon who loves to explore plant medicine + mysticism and weaving those experiences into her world of art. In her earlier years, she attended Riverside Community College and went on to graduate from California State University, Los Angeles in the late 90’s where she studied art + illustration.
Motherhood brought Denise back to the Inland Empire to put down roots + raise a family while homeschooling and starting a home business. It was during those beautifully chaotic years that she began to slowly immerse herself in community art spaces in downtown Riverside. Fully embracing the diy aesthetic, Denise was also nurturing an online space for women + mothers on Pearmama dot com, which started off as a humble mom blog in 2006.
Denise shares spiritual medicine in the form of art, divine messages to find our way home, uplifting the Divine Feminine to shift the culture at large + collectively heal the Earth and one another. At the center of Denise’s art practice is her spirituality: Elevating the ancestors, telling the story of Mother Earth, big rematriation energy a humble bow toward the plants the water the animals the land her art. Drawing + creating stories was a refuge as a latch-key child in the 80’s. Denise created little fantasy worlds for herself when the one she was living in couldn’t be understood. The artist is still creating those fantasy worlds for herself, vast and expansive, often exploring the stages of wombmanhood: inner child, maiden, mother, crone. A multi-disciplinary artist best known for her conceptual work with paint, collage, paper, murals and creative installation, Denise began exploring digital art in 2018 and it expanded her work in many life-changing ways. Her art is intentionally woman-centered + Earth-centered, rich with sacred Mesoamerican symbols, ancestral veneration and Divine Feminine mysticism The work fuses together storytelling with bold figurative shapes, universal symbols of feminine creation + dream-like color stories that bring to remembrance innerspaces we have visited other realms. Organic shapes often overlap and create unique abstract dimensions within dimensions in what the artist describes as: conversations with her spirits.
Denise has worked from her home studio in Riverside California since day one, a survival tactic that most creatives who are also parents can understand. A delicate balance but a very necessary one: it allowed her to be home with her children, normalizing the practice of being creative, doing what you love to do + being a grounded presence in the family. The artist works in the energy + style of Indigenous Futurism which draws upon our ancient indigenous technologies for inspiration and our collective liberation. Denise uses her art + visi to be in conversation with one another, to uplift the collective spirit + to raise the vibration of our communities. She creates art to uplift the feminine energy’s protective influence on Moth Earth + to remind us of our cosmic roots.
The artist has been very active in the Inland Empire art community leading art sessions, creating dynamic art programming + exhibiting her work in local spaces such as Back to the Grin Inland Mujeres Art Studio, The Garcia Center for the Arts, Division 9 Gallery, Palm Springs Art Museum, The Center for Social Justice & Civil Liberties, Pain Sugar Gallery, A Blve Rose Gallery, The Cheech Marin Center for Chicano Art & Culture, The Little Gallery of San Bernardino, Ontario Museum of History & Art, The Arts Area, Barrio Fuerza and All Eyes Gallery. Denise also has strong connections to the rest of her Southern California art community, working with Centro Cultural de la Raza, Tonalli Studio, Espacio 1839, Plaza de la Raza + Self-Help Graphics, to name a few.
Sharon Shapiro is a Virginia-based artist with a versatile painting practice. She views painting as a cunning vessel for the tension and insatiable longing that lurk beneath the surface. Working in diverse media and sizes, Shapiro portrays opposing forces in her figurative-based work: fantastic and natural, utopian and dystopian subject matter.
Shapiro has shown throughout the United States, including one and two-person exhibitions at SPRING/BREAK Art Show, NYC; the Museum of Contemporary Art Arlington, Arlington, VA; {Poem 88} Gallery, Atlanta, GA; Garvey Simon Projects, NYC; and the Gadsden Museum of Art, Gadsden, AL. Her group exhibitions include the Mint Museum, Charlotte, NC; Maine Center for Contemporary Art, Rockland, ME; the McLean Project for the Arts, McLean, VA; and the Masur Museum of Art, Monroe, LA. She has been in residence at Ucross, Jentel, Ragdale, The Hambidge Center, and the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts. Her practice has received grant support, including two awards from the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, and she was the recipient of the Atelier Focus Fellowship at AIR SFI in Georgia. Her work has been featured in New American Paintings, Whitewall, Art Spiel, Studio Visit, The Washington Post, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, and Kolaj Magazine. Shapiro holds an MFA from the Maine College of Art and a BFA from the Atlanta College of Art. She currently lives and works in Charlottesville, VA.
Justina Blakeney (b. 1979, Santa Rosa, CA) is a Los Angeles, California-based artist, designer, and author known for her vibrant, colorful, and eclectic style. Drawing upon themes of identity, spirituality, and connection to the natural world, Blakeney’s art serves as a visual exploration into the essence of the “true self” and the concept of being a "human being" rather than a "human doing." Blakeney often incorporates mixed media elements such as wire, textiles, and natural elements into her pieces. Her artistic vision emerges from a diverse array of references, from wrestling with and celebrating her curls, curves, and curiosities to explorations of pattern, cubist abstraction, and magical realism. Through her work, Blakeney seeks to uproot binary thinking and to inspire others to embrace their creativity, celebrate diversity, and honor the interconnectedness of all living things.
